Shirley A. Dawson has been a highly qualified dance teacher in a wide range of dance styles for many years. She is a member of the IDTA (International Dance Teachers' Association) and has coached many fellow members for their D32/33 Teacher Training qualifications - hence she is known as 'The Teacher's Teacher'.

Formerly Head of Fitness and Dance for Bradford & Ilkley Colleges, she now runs her own dancing school so that she can provide the personal touch and quality that large institutions do not provide.

The IDTA is the largest dance association in the world. As a member of the IDTA's North East Regional Executive Committee Shirley dedicates a large proportion of her time to the planning and organisation of dance competitions, and promoting the benefits of dance in general. She has also served as Vice-Chair on the YHRDC Committee (Yorkshire & Humberside Regional Dance Council), which has since become known as the CDET (Council for Dance Education and Training). In recent months Shirley has also provided choreography for an historical film to be shown on Channel 4, capturing the style and feel of dance in the late forties
